I just had a character who had to return to the overworld and do Zot:1-2 to get xp to get rid of transient mutations (one of which put me in stat zero in itself) plus approx 25 stat points that were deteriorated away, after about half an hour in abyss:3 and 4. Then you'll get lower and lower stats as long as you wander around without finding the rune, since you don't get any xp to get rid of those stat reductions. If you're unlucky, one of those mutations is deterioration.
